Probably the best international fundraising speaker in the world!
Stephen likes to claim he’s unemployable, but before setting up Target Direct with Pauline Lockier and Nick Thomas, he had created the immensely successful Fundraising Unit within Brann Direct Marketing and had worked with several other marketing agencies. Rarely did he ever venture into the commercial world and, when he did, he always regretted it! He is, first and foremost, a fundraiser.
Primarily, Stephen is a teacher and conference speaker (see below). He is a visiting Professor of Direct Response Fundraising at the Hartsook Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy, Plymouth University. He teaches regularly with the wonderful Professor Adrian Sargeant , delivering Certificate and Diploma courses in US, UK, Ireland and Norway.
And he is a long-serving speaker at conferences. He has spoken at the hugely prestigious International Fundraising Congress for the Resource Alliance for twenty-five years and regularly appears at the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Institute of Fundraising annual conferences, respectively in US and UK.
Stephen works with strategy and data specialist Profundo in Norway, visiting that country many times each year. He has run workshops for 44 Norwegian non-profits! And he regularly works with clients in US, Canada, Ireland, Denmark and New Zealand.
He has recently left the board of the UK’s Institute of Fundraising where he chaired the influential Standards Committee that sets the Code of Fundraising Practice for the UK. He writes a regular monthly column for Third Sector magazine in UK and for FINZ magazine in New Zealand. An ex-volunteer himself, he is a trustee of the overseas development charity Voluntary Service Overseas. He is a director of media agency MediaLab. He sits on the advisory fundraising think-tank Rogare, based on Plymouth University.
